The calculator
The boxes start filled with an illustrative example, not a benchmark. Replace it with your own numbers. All figures are per item.
What the customer pays for this item.
Your print-on-demand platform's all-in production and fulfillment cost, usually shown as one number by the platform.
Total ad spend divided by orders it produced, an average.
Payment processing
Most processors charge a percentage of the order plus a small flat fee.
Profit per item
At $24.00 sale price, after $11.00 base production cost, $3.00 ad spend and $1.00 in payment fees, this item clears $9.00, a 37.5% margin.
payment fee = sale price * (processing rate / 100) + flat fee profit = sale price - base production cost - ad spend - payment fee margin = profit / sale price
This is per item, not per store or per month. Treat the output as directional: base production cost can change without much notice, and platform-specific fee structures vary and are not modeled here.
See it on your own data Real numbers from your Shopify store, not a guess.
Base production cost from the POD platform can change without much notice, a print provider raises prices, a blank product's cost shifts, or a new fulfillment partner comes online at a different rate. This tool takes one snapshot in time. The number you type in today may not be the number the platform charges next month.
It also does not model platform-specific fee structures, which vary from one POD provider to the next and sometimes change by product type or shipping destination. Treat the output here as directional, showing the shape of the math, not an exact figure you can bank on.
Questions
It varies by POD platform, but is usually printing, the blank product itself, and the platform's own fulfillment fee, all shown to you as one combined number rather than broken into separate line items. Check your specific platform's pricing page to see exactly what is bundled in for your product.
It can be, but margins are commonly thin and vary heavily by category, product type, and how much you spend on ads to move each unit. There is no single reliable "typical" profitability figure for the category as a whole, treat any flat claim about it with suspicion.
Platforms adjust their pricing periodically, but there is no fixed cadence you can count on. Some changes come with advance notice, some do not. It is worth checking your platform's current rate before treating any older figure, including the default in this calculator, as still accurate.
No. Print-on-demand returns and damaged-item replacements have their own cost dynamics, often handled differently by each platform, and are not modeled in this calculator. Treat that as a real gap in the number above, not something already accounted for.
Conceptually, there are two levers in the formula: raise the sale price, or lower ad cost per order. Which one actually works for a specific product and audience is a more specific question than this calculator can answer, it depends on price sensitivity and where the ad spend is actually going.
