The payment processing fee calculator: what you actually keep.

Type order value, processor rate, and flat fee. The fee and net payout update live. No email, no gate, nothing leaves this page.

The calculator

Three numbers, and the answer moves as you type.

The boxes start filled with an illustrative example, not a benchmark or a quote from any processor. Replace it with your own numbers.

Your numbers.

The total charged to the customer for this order.

Most processors charge a percentage of the order plus a small flat fee. Check your own processor's statement for your real numbers, this is illustrative.

Your result.

Net payout

$62.82
3.4% of order value

On a $65.00 order at 2.9% + $0.30, the processor takes $2.19, leaving you $62.82.

Fee amount
$2.19
You keep, per $100 sold
$96.64

fee        = order value * (processor rate / 100) + flat fee
net payout = order value - fee

The fee and net payout are each rounded independently for display, the same way this calculator's other pages round every figure. That means the fee and net payout can look like they are one cent off from summing back to the order value. That is expected rounding behavior, not a bug.

What this does not tell you

Real processing rates vary a lot: by plan tier, by monthly volume, by card type (a rewards card typically costs more to accept than a debit card), and by country. Two stores with the same processor can pay meaningfully different effective rates depending on their mix of cards and their negotiated plan.

This calculator is explicitly illustrative, not a quote from any specific processor. It shows you the shape of the math, percentage plus flat fee, so you can plug in your own real rate once you know it, not a rate we are asserting as current or standard.

Questions

Common questions about processing fees.

Is 2.9% + $0.30 a standard processing rate?

It has historically been a common starting-tier rate quoted by several major processors for online card payments, which is why it is the default here. Rates vary by processor, plan, volume, and country, and change over time, so treat this as a familiar example to start from, not a current fact about what you will actually pay.

Do processing fees apply to shipping charged to the customer?

It depends on the processor and how the charge is structured. Some processors charge their percentage on the full amount charged, shipping included, others handle it differently. Check your own processor's documentation or statement to know for certain.

How do processing fees affect my margin?

They are one of several variable costs that come out of an order before you know your real margin, alongside cost of goods and shipping. The contribution margin calculator and price floor calculator both fold processing fees in alongside those other costs to show the fuller picture.

Do subscriptions have different processing rates?

Often, yes. Recurring or subscription billing is frequently priced differently from one-time card-present or card-not-present transactions by processors, sometimes higher, sometimes bundled into a different plan entirely. It varies enough that the only reliable answer is to check your own processor's rate card.

How do I find my real processing rate?

Check your own processor's statement or dashboard. Most break out the percentage and flat fee, or an effective blended rate, per transaction or per statement period. This tool is illustrative only and is not connected to any processor account.
