Does VAT Belong in Shopify Revenue? (No — Here's Why It Skews Your Profit)
No. VAT and sales tax collected on an order are money you owe a tax authority, not revenue you earned — but Shopify's order total is tax-inclusive by default, and any profit calculation that treats that total as revenue inflates revenue, and every margin built on top of it, by the exact amount of tax collected. True profit figures should always be calculated on tax-exclusive (net) revenue.
The formula
Net (tax-exclusive) revenue = Order total − VAT / sales tax collected True profit = Net revenue − COGS − payment fees − shipping − other costs
VAT is collected from the customer on the merchant's behalf and remitted to a tax authority later — it passes through the business, it isn't earned by it. Shopify's order total ("total_price") includes tax by default, so a profit calculation that starts from that field without first subtracting the tax portion is starting from an inflated base before a single cost is even subtracted.
This isn't a rounding error at scale. VAT commonly runs 15–25% of the tax-inclusive price across the EU and UK, so a store that's VAT-registered and sells there can be reporting profit and margin figures that are meaningfully overstated on every order, in every dashboard that isn't explicit about which revenue figure it started from.
Worked example
One order, EU VAT-registered merchant, 20% VAT:
Counted with VAT left in revenue (wrong)
- Order total (incl. 20% VAT)
- $120.00
- COGS
- −$30.00
- Shipping
- −$6.00
- Payment processing
- −$3.00
- "Profit"
- $81.00 (67.5%)
Counted on tax-exclusive revenue (correct)
- Order total, ex-VAT
- $100.00
- COGS
- −$30.00
- Shipping
- −$6.00
- Payment processing
- −$3.00
- True profit
- $61.00 (61.0%)
Leaving VAT in revenue overstates this single order's profit by exactly $20 — the VAT amount — and overstates the margin by 6.5 points. The $20 was never the merchant's money to begin with; it's owed to the tax authority regardless of what any dashboard reports as "profit."
How Upstream computes this for your store automatically
This is exactly the pattern behind real, specific complaints about other profit-tracking apps: one TrueProfit review says the app "doesn't track VAT collection which is useless for EU businesses," and a Netherlands-based Triple Whale merchant wrote that the app "casually leaves VAT in your revenue... revenue should never include VAT." Upstream pulls your real orders, product costs, shipping, and refunds directly from Shopify and computes contribution margin and cohort profit automatically, order by order, rather than a spreadsheet you maintain by hand. If your store is VAT- or sales-tax-registered, it's worth confirming with any profit tool — Upstream included — exactly which revenue figure, tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive, is feeding its margin math before you trust the percentage.
